#2: No PDC Needed Study Group - The Zones
It’s already the 13th of May! Some of you picked a permaculture project and many more of you have been lurking and waiting for more information. Before we talk about today’s topic, the Zones, I want to show you how my own project is going. Remember my sad duck area? Significant progress has been made.
First there was cleanup and some dirt moved around the bathtub:
Then today we...

PDC assignment...from NewFoundFolk
NewFoundFolk submitted their project:
OK, I live in an old house where the landlord has cut it up into 6 suites. There is a lot of land to use as good garden space for veggie production but a lack of good soil. I have seen the compost bin become a rat feeding bin. It doesn’t break anything down. The soil is that it does produce is pretty fowl because people put whatever they want in...

#1: No PDC Needed Study Group First Topic!
Topic: The Permaculture Principles
Ok it’s the 2nd of May and not the 1st. But it’s not my fault! Tumblr was down yesterday for me and I’m sorry about that. Here we go!
I think the first thing we should talk about is The Permaculture Principles. Normally there are 12 of them, and they can be a little confusing. Fortunately for you, I have created my own set of...

clusterpod asked: Hi again Nicole! Your no-PDC virtual group is a great idea. Alas, there are some who just don't, and won't, use facebook. But thats ok! We'll follow along and see what gets posted on tumblr. Again, love the idea, looking forward to seeing what transpires. -Andrei

You Want to Learn Permaculture? Read THIS.
May 6th is International Permaculture Day, and I want to celebrate. Most people who want to learn Permaculture do so by earning a Permaculture Design Certificate. This piece of paper is really great, but also really expensive ($1500 to $3000). Guess what? You don’t need a PDC to learn permaculture and implement the principles into your own life. So we’re going to have…

I Have Bacteria All Over My House
I knew how important it is, but I didn’t truly realize HOW IMPORTANT IT IS. I have really gotten into cultivating bacteria and it’s so much fun. It’s also made me realize how crucial bacteria is for the existence of all life. Without it, everything would die.
The picture above is today’s batch of kefir fermenting. Kefir is a slightly mysterious fermented dairy...

Gobbling Everything Up
In the beautiful film Spirited Away, No Face is a tormented spirit who reacts in a very extreme way to the kindness of a little girl. His intense loneliness makes him very needy, and when the girl shows him a small bit of concern, he becomes obsessed with her to an unhealthy level. Noticing that she needs something, he brings it to her and she is happy. He thinks that if one makes her happy,...

That Moment When You Know You are An Adult
I think I may have finally reached that moment when I knew I was a grown up. Was it the feeling of hopelessness I found between the news of Monsanto and climate change or the silliness of my 9 year old fixing my coat in the rain?
It wasn’t a sudden realization. I still feel a little bit like I’m the boy in Big hoping people don’t find out how young I am while simultaneously...

Things You Should Know About
The farm made an appearance at the Qualicum Beach Farmer’s Market today. This is Mike and Michelle, two of our farm workers who look pretty happy even though they had to wake up early.
It’s the spring market so we didn’t have much to sell yet, just microgreens and books and subscriptions. It was satisfying to do our first market of the season though.
It’s Easter...

Triangle Hoops and the 49th Parallel
Here’s a few of our low tunnels today. They are looking pretty green aren’t they? We have 3500 sq. ft. planted, in 14 low tunnels, including peas, beans, radishes, beets, carrots, leeks, brussels sprouts, broccoli raab and even cucumber.
The cucumbers are a bit of a big experiment…most people in our area don’t have much luck with cucumbers and we started them early...

Hosting Volunteer Farm Workers
Hello farm interns who live in my house and reading my blog… don’t worry, I only have the nicest things to say about you. :)
Hosting volunteer farm workers is a learning and growing experience for me, as it probably is for any farmer. Farms who host WWOOFers, apprentices, and interns probably learn more from the young people who come to visit than the other way around. I think I may...

Cheap and Easy Homemade Worm Bin
I have 2000 worms arriving by mail this afternoon so my task in this blustery snowstorm is to prepare their home. Eventually I want to have 15 or more of these bins in the barn, doing all of my compost work for me. No more turning piles and measuring temperature! Not only does this mean less work for me, worms do it at least twice as fast.
This is our first bin. To build up a bigger...
